Performing Arts on the Lake The Bluegrass House Concerts started in June, 2003, when Regina and Jim Derzon decided to provide a performance venue for local and visiting bluegrass musicians. Having many friends who are performers, they thought it was a logical way to share their love of this form of “American roots music.” The concerts are held on several Saturday evenings in the fall and spring. After an hour of socializing and sharing of potluck “heavy appetizers” and drinks, the crowd gathers to hear the invited musicians, who typically play two 45-minute sets with a half-hour break for refreshments and socializing. The dress is very casual and the Derzons welcome and encourage parents to bring children. If youngsters get restless, they can join other children in the playroom. Many of the pioneers of bluegrass music are from the Washington, DC area, giving the Bluegrass House Concerts a rich selection of talent. Since the mid 1950's, the Washington, DC area has been called the “Bluegrass Capital of America.” Folk music and jazz artists are also invited from time to time to these house concerts, but bluegrass remains the predominant style. Reservations are required for each concert as seating is limited and varies with the size of the band performing. A collection of $15 per person is taken at the door, and all proceeds go directly to the performers. If you would like to be added to the e-mail invitation list, please contact Regina Derzon or call 703-916-0655.
