WID Bulletin #202, July 2002
Holmes/Tripps Run Watershed Pilot
National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) of the U. S.
Geological Survey has adopted WID's watershed as a pilot project to examine
the effects of urban and suburban growth upon diversity in the Metropolitan
Washington, D. C. area.
The objective of the overall project is to supply
a variety of watershed managers with the information that is needed to make
sound, environmentally responsible decisions. Data, tools and best
management practices will be made available and will enable communities to
address issues such as sprawl, habitat fragmentation and loss, water and
air quality problems. Success of the project is not only contingent upon
content, but use of the Internet for product delivery.
NBII <http://www.nbii.gov> is a broad federal program to provide
increased access to data and information on the nation's biological
resources. It coordinates partners, such as Virginia Tech and the
Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, and collaborators in
government agencies, non-government organizations, and private industry.
Lake Barcroft WID is an active cooperator contributing information and
participating in future joint activities.
Pictured above are three NBII
representatives standing on the site of the future debris deflector being
built as part of the Potterton Bridge complex.
This designation is an honor and will introduce WID to numerous new friends
and a rich assortment of contemporary ideas.
