Area Captains will be the eyes and ears to keep Community property in good order

Floyd "Robby" Robinson has a knack for finding the right people for the right project. He's putting together 30 Area Captains to be the "eyes and ears" of Lake Barcroft. "People are very forthcoming," he says, "very ready to volunteer when asked."

And ask Robby does.

He only has a few spots left for the new LBA-inspired group, which will check out assigned areas several times a week to ensure that everything is clean and in proper order. When something is amiss, the captains may call on neighbors to set it right or call our Maintenance Coordinator (and another Lake volunteer) Mike Neibling, who may summon the resources of the LBA or bring in someone from outside the Lake to remedy the problem.

              Robby Robinson is an engineer who spent 15 years designing and inspecting site plans for new construction in Fairfax County. As the Captain of our Area Captains, he will work with Lake Barcroft, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), Fairfax County, utility companies and the cable company as problems arise. "You need someone who can speak to them in their own language," he laughs, "and I can do that."

              Residents should understand, says Robby, that VDOT owns and is responsible for maintaining the 30-foot right of way on all streets in the community, plus 6 feet on either side and all of the traffic circles. The side strips include utility rights-of-way, sidewalks, drainage ditches and storm runoffs.

              Captains can work with neighbors to build consensus on requested community improvements such as lighting or landscaping. They are also empowered to take action, although the LBA Board has ultimate authority for such improvements.

              At press time Robby still had five openings for Area Captains. He would welcome a call at 703-941-3865 from willing volunteers.
