Capt. Jonathan Karpick, son of Jane and Ron Karpick of Rusticway Lane, and Jamye Fe Michele Jamison were married on March 1 at the chapel at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, NC. On March 15, Jonathan left for duty in the Middle East as part of the California (Army) National Guard. Both Jonathan and Michele are graduates of Princeton University. Jonathan, an aeronautical engineer, was at Stanford University working on his Ph.d. in Robotics. Michele, an art historian, is completeing her Masters degree from the University of Texas at Austin with an internship in Chicago in book and paper conservation.

Craig Presti Kalkwarf was born on March 7 to Sue Presti and Scott Kalkwarf of Beachway Drive. He weighed in at 6 pounds 15 ounces and measured 20 ¼ inches. We hear that Craig is looking forward to spending his first summer on the Lake, and is particularly anxious to accompany Mom in the jog-stroller so that he can get to know the neighborhood, and to go with Dad on his fishing excursions around the Lake.

Shirley Ruth Bernstein Fox, 80, wife of Lawrence Fox of Lakeview Drive, died on Feb. 23. She moved to Lake Barcroft in 1980 and was the mother of three adult children and stepmother of three. With two other women, Mrs. Fox founded The Learning in Retirement Institute at George Mason University in 1991, and was its first vice president. Now a wide-ranging program of study, LRI is unique in that it is not an extension of a university continuing education program, but rather is the result of grassroots efforts by senior citizens themselves. Mrs. Fox was also active in the Book Club of the Lake Barcroft Woman's Club.

Elizabeth (Betty) Harvey, wife of Glenn Harvey, COL., USA (RET), died on February 27 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery on March 17. The family moved to Waterway Drive in 1959, and Mrs. Harvey raised four children here while her husband served frequent tours abroad. She was active in community PTA's and in the Lake Barcroft Woman's Club, serving for a time as its treasurer. She also remained active in Alpha Phi, her college sorority. In later years the Harvey's bought a boat that they kept in Florida. They loved to sail, and eventually bought a home in Florida where they lived for half the year.

From Tom O'Rourke of Old Farm Road: Our Lake Barcroft neighbor Don McCarten (of Dearborn Drive) died suddenly March 12 while on his daily run. Don was a great neighbor, always ready to help. A few weeks ago, he came to our rescue when a water main burst, flooding our yard and threatening to flood our house.  Don was 73 and had run in dozens of marathons. Many of you will have noticed him, thin and elegant, as he ran through the neighborhood daily. We will miss him, and our deepest sympathies go out to his wife Joyce and their daughters Michelle and Melissa.
