George McLennan, LBA President and founder of Lake Link offers these tips for our listserv members:

1. Do not use the subject line of the incoming message when replying to the listserv. Change the Subject to reflect the topic about which you are replying, for example:

That way a reader can look at the table of contents at the top of the digest message and see what's being discussed. It also ensures that your message will be grouped properly in the archives for later retrieval. Once a message is in the archive, it can't be changed. In addition, it keeps the annoyance factor down for the other readers. (It is impossible to access directly an item from the table of contents. You have to scroll down.)

2. When replying to a message, include ONLY the specific parts of the previous message to which you are replying. When you click on the Reply button, most mail software will include all original message in the reply and set if off with a ">". This means you must delete all parts of the original message that are not related to your topic. (Your email may be set up so that replies do not include old text - when you hit Reply you get a blank message space. If so, disrregard this paragraph.)

3. Be sure to put your Lake Link mail delivery on hold when you set your mail software to auto reply. You can do that on the Lake Link page of the community web site: (http://www.lakebarcroft.org/as/lakelink.shtml).

4. Send replies meant only for an individual directly to that individual using their direct address, which is included in the message header. Again, it keeps the annoyance factor down for readers by not having to read through what they would otherwise consider "junk" mail.

5. Do not reply to an invitation to participate in an event to the general list.

6. Send administrative comments meant for the list administrator (that's me) to the intended recipient and not to the general list. Examples include an unsubscribe message or a request to change your delivery options.

7. Keep personal messages personal. Do not send them to the list.

8. Anonymous messages cannot be posted to Lake Link. If your email address does not include your name, please sign your messages so that everyone knows who is "speaking."
