Congratulations to Corpus Christi School on its new St. Anthony's Education Center, which was dedicated last month. Chairman for the fundraising was Andy Doyle of Lakeview Drive. Andy had been lobbying for a gym at Corpus Christi for years. Andy and Joyce's daughters--Erin, Samantha and Kerry--played basketball. Kerry, a 7th grader, still plays on the team. So, when the time came to name a fund-raising chairman, Andy stepped up. It took about five years, and now the school, on Glen Carlyn Road and Route 7, not only has a gym, but also a stage and space for child care, youth activities and meetings. Nice work, Andy.

Our beloved Beachway Drive neighbor Louis Spector died on Jan. 4 from respiratory failure. Louie lived in Lake Barcroft since 1956. He was an active and outspoken community leader. He and his wife Kathy have been fabulous neighbors and friends. Our children called him Uncle Louie and begged daily to visit him. Louie was a kid magnet. He took a genuine interest in children, making them laugh and spoiling them with treats. Here is a note from my 6-year-old daughter to Louie's widow Kathy:
Dear Kathy,
I remember when me and Louie played together. I loved playing with him. I wish that he was here. I hope you can go without him. He was my best friend in the neighborhood.
Love, Lauren
At 84, Louie was sharp, smart, witty and well informed. He was an avid reader and constantly kept up-to-date on his passion - the law. Penny Gross, Mason District Supervisor, said, "I always enjoyed having a spirited conversation with him." Louie had a long and successful career as a lawyer beginning with his graduation from the University of Buffalo (SUNY - Buffalo) as valedictorian. He was a judge of the U.S. Court of Federal Claims in 1968 until retiring in 1985.
He was a member of the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association and had been chairman of the group's public contract section. He was also a member of the Cosmos Club and had been president of Beth El Hebrew Congregation in Alexandria
He is survived by his wife Kathy, daughter Gale, two sons - Arthur and James, three grandchildren and three sisters.
