Candidates for the
LBA board -- 2003
Full biographies of our nominees were mailed to
Lake residents last month. Election will be at the Annual Meeting, at 7:30
p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 26, at Belvedere Elementary School on Columbia Pike at
Whispering Lane. Here is a quick look at the nominees for the seven openings in
the LBA Board:
URI ARKIN is a second-generation Barcrofter. His parents moved
here in 1965. Uri purchased his house on Rusticway Lane in 1997 after
graduating from William & Mary and the University of Miami law school. Uri
works for the Arlington County Government in real estate acquisitions. At the Lake, Uri is a staff reporter
for the new Lake Barcroft Newsletter. Off the Lake, he is an active charter
member of both the Bethesda-Potomac Jaycees and Impact DC.
FRANK AUKOFER has served one term on the LBA board. He has served
as membership chairman, then as publications chairman. He reorganized the LBA
Newsletter in 2002 with a new staff of volunteers. Frank is a newspaperman, who
retired in June 2000, after 40 years as a reporter and Washington Bureau Chief
for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. He was president of the National Press Club
in 1978, and president and chairman (1980-1985) and current board member of the
National Press Foundation.
JIM BRANHAM has been an active member of the community since his
arrival at Lake Barcroft. When the J.E.B. Stuart Crew team lost its coach in
1995, he volunteered to coach the
team and became head coach. Jim
graduated from the U.S. Military Academy, and he has master's degrees in
Engineering Administration from the University of Utah and in Information
Science Technology from George Washington University. He works for Internosis,
an IT consulting firm.
MAC CANTER has made his home in Lake Barcroft since 1981. He is
a lawyer who specializes in representing non-profit organizations. Mac earned
his bachelor's degree at Randolph-Macon College and master's degrees from Yale
and GWU. He has served on the LBA Board for the past four years, has chaired
the Legal Committee, and helped steer the board through a number of legal and
tax related issues, including the formation of the Lake Barcroft Foundation and
the Parcel A settlement.
DAVID DALE and his wife, Joann, live on Beachway Drive. David is
Hospitality chairman of the Newcomers' Club and a member of the Research
Committee studying the possibilities of a Lake Barcroft Community Center. He
holds MBA and PhD degrees in management and has more than 35 years experience in real estate
development and high technology.
He has developed more than 18 real estate properties in the DC area, and
directed the management of three automation firms.
REGINA DERZON moved to Grass Hill Terrace in June 1999. She has
worked for non-profit associations for most of her career and is currently a
consultant for Legal Services Corporation. She holds degrees in Business
Administration, Business Education and Executive Management. She is active in
her daughter's Brownie troop and in projects at the children's schools
(Belvedere and Sleepy Hollow). Regina has been involved in the 4th of July
fireworks and boat sticker & removal projects.
DAVID FELD is vice president of the LBA. He is also a past
president of the LBA, a past chairman of the Environmental Quality committee
and a past vice president of the Newcomers' Club. David was the Virginia State
engineer for the USDA Rural Housing Service. He has a master's degree in water
resource planning/engineering. He is president of Geese Peace, working for
humane wildlife management practices, and president of FPS Solutions, a
software development company.
STEVE KLEIN and his wife, Burma, have lived in Lake Barcroft
since 1981. Steve has an MBA from the University of Chicago, and is employed by
the Center for Naval Analyses, where he specializes in program planning and
program management for the U.S. Marine Corps. Steve and his wife owned and
managed Practical Computer, Inc., in Springfield for six years. He has been
active on the Lake's Neighborhood Watch patrols.
JIM SEBOLKA and his wife Karin moved to Lakeview Drive in 1983.
Jim holds a master's degree in Industrial Engineering from Texas A & M.
Most of Jim's career has been in strategic planning and acquisition management
of major U.S. military systems. He has also worked as a senior engineer for a
large consulting firm, and three years ago formed his own consulting group. Jim
helped charter the Afterburners at the Lake. He is currently chair of the
Innovative Concepts Seniors program.
DICK SHRUM and his wife Meg moved to Lake Barcroft in 1985. He
is a life-long water enthusiast, fisherman, and outdoorsman. Dick has
participated in WID lake and fish management activities and in Newcomers' Club
events. He recently re-committed his support to Neighborhood Watch patrols. He has volunteered at Belvedere and
Glasgow and has two children attending Stuart High School. Dick retired from
U.S. Civil Service in 1998 after 41 years, the last 21 with State Department.
MIKE SPIVEY and his family moved to Crosswoods Circle in 1998.
From 1999 to 2001, Mike served as the president of the Lake Barcroft Newcomers'
Club. Currently Mike is chairman of the Innovative Concepts sub-committee that
is considering the possibility of developing a Lake Barcroft Community Center.
He is a lawyer and a health care finance consultant, with degrees from the
University of Chicago and Georgetown.
PETE WALKER and his family have been residents of Lake Barcroft
since 1981. Pete is a Naval Academy graduate who served in the Navy for 27
years. Since retiring he has been employed by several firms providing services
in the areas of ship repair, electronic commerce, and the environment. Pete is
chairman of the LBA Security Committee. Previously, he was appointed to the LBA
Board to complete the term of a member who left the Lake.
RICHARD WESTEBBE and his family moved to Lakeview in 1969. Richard graduated from Georgetown's
Foreign Service School, did his graduate economics work at Harvard and was
awarded Fulbright and Harvard Scholarships. He made his career in international
development. He retired from the World Bank as lead economist on West Africa in
l991. For more than 20 years, Richard has been on the board (and several times
president) of Central Fairfax Services, helping handicapped adults.
DOREEN WILLIAMS came to Lake Barcroft nearly 30 years ago when she
married the late Carrington Williams. She had been teaching political science
at the Northern Virginia Community College, but left to join her husband in his
legislative and political endeavors. When Carrington returned to his law
practice, Doreen went to law school. She became an Assistant County Attorney
before entering private practice.
She primarily practiced family law, and retired in the fall.
