Thurgood Marshall Scholarship

The Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Program was established by the Lake Barcroft community to honor one of its most distinguished residents, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. Each year graduating in seniors at J.E.B. Stuart High School who excel academically and demonstrate leadership in furthering understanding and tolerance among persons of diverse cultures and races, are recognized. Students must meet the following criteria:

  1. Demonstrate superior academic achievement and capability.
  2. Participate in extra-mural activities that reflect an interest in and commitment to the ideals that embodied Justice Marshall's life. Such activities could include working on multi-cultural day celebrations, participating in the peer mediation program, S.G.A. activities involvement in international clubs (such as the Vietnamese, Hispanic, or African-American clubs) and volunteer activities in the community at-large, particularly in activities that offer support for those in need.

Starting in the Year 2000, it is anticipated that the scholarship program will have three components: lecture series, two scholarships and mentor partnership.

The lecture series will include guest speakers from our community as well as appropriate individuals who will speak to Civic/Government classes on the life and times of Justice Marshall and the impact of the Civil Rights movement on American life.

Two Thurgood Marshall scholars are selected annually by the JEB Stuart faculty from graduating seniors who are going on to college. Each student will receive a scholarship and the opportunity to participate in the Mentor Partnership program. One of the scholarships is the Calkins Memorial Scholarship.

The Mentor Partnership links a college-educated resident of Lake Barcroft with each Thurgood Marshall Scholar. Through an informal association that is expected to last at least through the Freshman year and hopefully beyond, the mentor's role is to serve as a role model and as a more senior adult who can offer encouragement and advice (when sought). There is no financial implication in this.

Scholarship funds are sent directly to the university or college when the student enrolls.

The Thurgood Marshall Scholarship program is a Section 501(c)(3) organization owned by the Lake Barcroft Foundation. Contributions are tax deductible and may be made at any time and particularly when annual LBA membership fees are paid. The fund currently has assets of approximately $82,000.
